On behalf of the Data Doubles team, collaborator Abigail Goben presented “In Their Own Words, Student Perspectives on Privacy and Library Participation in Learning Analytics Initiatives” as a Library and Information Technology Association session at the American Library Association Conference in Washington DC.
Kyle Jones, a collaborator on the Data Doubles project, has published three new peer-reviewed journal articles in recent months. Each article addresses various aspects of student privacy in relation to emerging learning analytics practices.
Representing the Data Doubles research team, Andrew Asher gave a presentation entitled, “Do students care? Student perspectives on personal data use in library learning analytics,” at the 10th International Evidence Based Library and Information Practice Conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

The beginnings of the Data Doubles project began with the team’s collaborative work on a SPEC Kit survey for the Association of Research Libraries. The team is happy to announce that the SPEC Kit is now published and an informative webinar is upcoming.
American Libraries has a new article about learning analytics, the collection of data for use in enhancing learning environments, and its potential perils. Though universities have been compiling statistics on students for some time now, such as with retention and residency rates, learning analytics explore a new frontier.
The research project will conduct a student-centered, three-year research agenda into student perspectives of privacy issues associated with academic library participation in learning analytics (LA) initiatives.
